Community Needs - Stats
The Uninsured:
- 1 in
4 adults have been uninsured in the past year and many of these people
simply went without needed care because they could not afford it.
- The
L.A. Times reports that not only are insurance companies raising
premiums as often as twice a year, they are denying coverage for
reasons as simple as:
- ...taking expensive prescription drugs (even if it is just allergy medicine)
- ...having more than one chronic condition (even if mild and controllable)
- ...showing "signs" of
needing mental health services.
- There are 6.5 million uninsured individuals in California.
Importance of Pap Smears
- Between 1955 and 1992, the number of cervical cancer deaths in the
United States declined by 74% - the main reason for this life-saving
reduction was the increased use of the Pap smear. Pap smears save
lives.
- The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2007, about 11,150 cases
of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed in the United States
and about 3,670 women will die from cervical cancer.
- Unlike other cancers,
conditions leading to cervical cancer can be detected before invasive
cancer develops. With appropriate evaluation and follow-up, these
conditions are nearly 100% treatable.
Importance of Therapy
- A new landmark study
by the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) reports that nearly
half of all Americans will develop a mental disorder sometime in their
lives.
- It also suggests that the United States is poised to rank
number one for mental illness globally.
- People with psychiatric illnesses
have a 20% shorter life expectancy, the risks of diabetes, hypertension
and cardiovascular death are all dramatically increased by the presence
of on-going untreated mental disorders.
