CERVICITIS

WHAT IS IT:

Cervicitis simply means inflammation of the cervix. One half of all women in the United States are diagnosed with cervicitis at some point in their lives.

WHAT CAUSES IT:

Cervicitis is commonly caused by a sexually transmitted infection such as chlamydia or trichomonas. It can also be caused by irritation to the cervix from spermicides, douching, feminine hygiene sprays, scented tampons, or other products containing chemicals.

SYMPTOMS:

Women with cervicitis often have no symptoms. When symptoms are present they may include a white or yellow discharge with a foul odor, low back pain, painful periods, lower abdominal pain, and bleeding or spotting. If the cervicitis is being caused by a sexually transmitted infection, symptoms of that infection may be present as well.

Untreated cervicitis can lead to problems becoming pregnant or giving birth.

DIAGNOSIS:

Cervicitis is easily diagnosed by a health care provider during a pelvic exam. To prevent complications from cervicitis, make sure to have a yearly gynecologic exam.

TREATMENT:

Cervicitis is usually treated with Zithromax or Doxycycline. If it is caused by a sexually transmitted infection, medication to treat original infection is needed as well.

RECURRENCE:

Having had cervicitis does not protect a person from getting it again. A woman may have it many times in her life.

PREVENTION:

Precautions against sexually transmitted infections should be taken. If a person has more than one partner, a latex condom is a good defense if it is put on before starting sex and worn until the penis is withdrawn. Avoid douching, feminine hygiene sprays, and scented tampons and maxi-pads. Be aware of, and avoid, products such as detergents, bubble baths, and spermicides, that cause irritation and sensitivity.
